While the dental implant process is invasive and prolonged, the final result is a healthier tooth, more illustrious smile, and a more confident you. Thanks to the advancement of dental technology, your dental implant will look and feel completely natural, making the procedure well worth your time and finances.
Here’s an overview of the procedure so you know what to expect:
Jaw Preparation
First, your jaw must be prepared to receive the dental implant. We will prepare a titanium screw and insert it into your gum. For some, the jawbone lacks the foundation to support the implant, so bone grafting might be necessary.
For three to six months, your jawbone and the implant must heal together, which is a process called osseointegration. The success of your dental implant is dependent upon this fusion, as it provides security and strength to your implant.
The Implant Is Placed
Once your jawbone is healed, the gum tissue is peeled back and an abutment is secured to the implant. For the next two to three weeks, your gum tissue will heal by closing around, but not over, the abutment.
The Porcelain Crown Is Attached
After your gum tissue has healed, we will take impressions of your mouth and teeth. These impressions are used to create your artificial tooth and ensure it compliments your existing smile. During this brief window, Smiles By Sands will attach a temporary crown.
Finally, once your porcelain dental crown is complete, the temporary prosthetic is removed and replaced with your artificial tooth.
Dental Implant Upkeep
In order to ensure the optimal lifespan of your dental implant, you must provide it with regular maintenance. This includes:
- Regular brushing with non-abrasive toothpaste and flossing
- Professional cleaning every three to four months
Additionally, practicing superb oral hygiene between surgeries is necessary in order to prevent the gum tissue from swelling, thus dooming your implant.
Don’t Delay Seeking Treatment
Don’t let dental anxiety or financial concerns prevent you from seeking the treatment you need. If financing your dental implant is your concern, then delay will only worsen your condition and cost you more in the long-term. Plus, at Smiles By Sands, we provide our patients with numerous dental financing options.
If you experience dental anxiety, Smiles By Sands practices sedation dentistry, which will greatly reduce your stress and unease.
