Endodontics Questions
Am I a good candidate for endodontic therapy?
Do you have a natural tooth seriously damaged by decay or injury? A root canal may be necessary to avoid extraction and save the tooth. Why is this important? Keeping your natural tooth affects the look and function of your mouth. For most root canal patients, the procedure is a necessity, not an option. If the decay in your tooth has spread to the dental pulp, the center of the tooth, then it’s likely time for a root canal. But don’t worry. Today’s root canal is a simple, pain-free experience that keeps your tooth strong and prevents bacteria from further destroying the tooth’s interior.
What is an “endodontist”?
An endodontist is a dental specialist trained in the diagnosis and treatment of dental issues arising in your tooth’s dental pulp, tooth root, and surrounding tissue. All dentists receive some endodontic training, but endodontists are specially trained in all facets of endodontic therapy, completing additional years to learn advanced endodontic techniques.
How do I know if I need endodontic treatment?
Do you experience these signs of a dental problem?
- Tooth or gum pain
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Tooth discoloration
- Gum tenderness or swelling
- Broken or cracked tooth
It is likely you may need endodontic therapy, but only a thorough examination by Dr. Jason Sands will tell you for sure.
How does endodontic therapy save the tooth?
The infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned. The doctor then fills the space with a special, safe material called gutta percha. The space is sealed and the tooth is ready to place a crown or other restoration, ensuring strength and functionality for the tooth and avoiding extraction.
