Improving Your Family’s Oral Hygiene
Your family's dental heath is extremely important. Maintaining a healthy smile means less time spent at the dental office and an overall healthy body. Cosmetic dentists Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands offer several oral hygiene tips to improve your family's dental health.
- Eat a balanced diet – Having knowledge of the Four Basic Food Groups will help you know what healthy foods to put in your body. Healthy foods boost the immune system and prevent dental problems like periodontal disease.
- Use fluoride daily – Fluoride has been proven to strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. Daily use of fluoride through toothpaste or oral tablets can reduce tooth decay by more than 60%.
- Avoid eating too much sugar – Sugar can eat away at your teeth and create cavities. Eating too much sugar is not only bad for your overall heath, but bad for your oral health as well. Eat sugar in moderation and brush your teeth after every time your eat sugar.
- Bush and floss your teeth regularly – You can greatly improve the health of your teeth and prevent cavities and plaque buildup by brushing and flossing your teeth daily. Brush your teeth after every meal and snack to remove any food that may be stuck in between or on your teeth. Floss after meals to remove food and plaque in between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach.
Following these simple at home oral hygiene tips will keep you and your family's teeth healthy and beautiful. Please contact our family dentistry office if you have any questions or wish to schedule a free consultation.

Periodontal Disease and Your Health
Periodontal disease can increase the risk of stroke, diabetes and heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth can cause problems with clotting in the cardiovascular system, as well as, respiratory infections.
It is especially important for patients who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or diabetes, to get regular cleanings and have good home care. This will decrease the harmful bacteria that can build up and cause damage to your oral and overall health. Brushing and flossing is not enough. You need to visit your dentist for professional cleanings more often to ensure this harmful bacteria is not doing any harm.
People with type II diabetes are 3 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than non diabetics. Diabetes can cause damage to the gum tissue and bone that support teeth. This tissue change can contribute to the overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
In some cases gum disease can cause respiratory infections. Bacteria that are inhaled from the mouth and throat can lead to pneumonia. These harmful bacteria can be transferred through our saliva.
So, make sure that everyone in your family is getting regular check ups and cleanings. We would be happy to see them at Smiles by Sands. Call our office (818) 766-6121 to make an appointment.
Remember, cleaning your teeth is not just about having a pearly white, polished smile, it’s about maintaining overall health. Check back soon for information on pregnancy and the importance of good dental hygiene.

General Dentistry and Cavities
Dental cavities or holes in teeth are caused by tooth decay which is a very common problem that causes many patients discomfort and includes people of all ages. Good oral hygiene consisting of regular brushing and flossing and regular dental examinations and professional dental cleanings can prevent cavities from occurring, but even those who diligently follow a good oral hygiene program can develop cavities.
Cavities are caused by dental caries which are caused by various strains of bacteria that grow in your mouth by feeding on sugars and other carbohydrates left behind from meals and snacks that have not been removed by brushing and flossing.
There are several treatment options available to deal with cavities that depend on the amount of decay and aesthetic concerns. In addition, cavities or holes compromise the structural integrity of your teeth and cause dental pain, tooth loss and infections that can spread to other areas of your body.
Treatment options vary according to how far the cavity has progressed and include porcelain fillings, dental inlays or dental onlays, porelain crowns and in the case of tooth loss, dental implants.
If your family is concerned about tooth decay and cavities, please contact Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands of Smiles By Sands Cosmetic and Family Dentistry today in Valley Village, California to learn how they can help you improve the health of your teeth and gums.
