Halloween and Safe Candy

Here are some tips to make sure Halloween candy is safe for your little ones.

  • Try to trick-or-treat during early hours only.

  • Examine all candy thoroughly before eating any of it.

  • If wrappers are open or loose, do not eat it.

  • Only eat candy that's been store wrapped.

  • Spit it out if it tastes "funny" in any way.

  • Try to consume only small amounts of candy (as a general rule) or you may be visiting us far more often than you'd like!

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween from everyone at Smiles By Sands!

Tooth Whitening and Sensitivity

Over-the-counter tooth whitening kits often produce unsatisfactory results with the added problem of creating tooth sensitivity due to chemical reactions with the tooth enamel.

A tooth desensitizer applied directly to your teeth by a dentist can help to alleviate sensitivity and offer months or years of relief. An increase in tooth sensitivity may signal another dental problem not related to tooth whitening, such as tooth decay or gum disease, so be sure to mention this to your dentist at your next visit or sooner if possible to avoid an even bigger problem.

Advances in the technology of professional tooth whitening systems administered by a dentist or monitored by a dentist have made the possibility of sparkling, white teeth available to all. Teeth that have been discolored by aging, staining from food, drink, certain medications or tobacco products can be restored to their former brightness or even better by professional tooth whitening products.

At Smiles By Sands Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, professional tooth whitening products are safe, effective and provide dramatic and lasting results. There is an at-home whitening system available, that when used under the supervision of Dr. Jamie Sands or Dr. Jason Sands, is a safe, effective and convenient alternative to the in-office system.

Please contact Smiles By Sands Cosmetic and Family Dentistry in Valley Village, California today and learn more about tooth whitening systems and which system is the right choice for you.

Healthy Dental Snacks Versus the Worst Junk Foods for Your Teeth

Almost all foods have the potential to cause decay. However, some foods have higher potential than others. Obviously, foods higher in sugar content cause more decay than foods that are higher in nutritional value. Cookies and Graham crackers are among the worst snack foods for your teeth. Of course, hard candy and chewy candy, like taffy and caramel must also be avoided. Remember that saying, " Eat an apple on going to bed and you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread"? But, remember that dried fruits do the opposite. These will send you to your dentist more often than you wish. Most dried fruit products are like little packages of sugar that stick to your teeth. Sugary breakfast cereals are enticing, but stick to ones that do not have sugar listed in the first three ingredients. Soda and fruit juice are also very high in sugar content and again have high tooth decay potential.

Foods that have low decay potential are much healthier for you and for your teeth. Feel free to drink all the water you want, there's really no decay potential there. As a matter of fact, rinsing your mouth with water after meals and snacks, helps clear food away from the teeth. Nuts and popcorn have very little decay potential. These snacks might get caught between your teeth, but a little dental floss will handle this. Fresh vegetables are always a smart choice for your teeth. Also, they're full of good nutrients overall. If you're craving something sweet for dessert or to snack on, dark chocolate is always a wise choice for your teeth. Do not go to the candy shop and buy a box of dark chocolate chews or butter creams. We are suggesting simple dark chocolate without cream or sugar or other unhealthy ingredients.

So, if you're prone to decay and visiting your dentist way too often to remove that decay, think about what sort of snacks you are putting in your mouth and body every day. There are plenty of yummy alternatives that will help you cut down on those dental visits.
