Tooth Decay Under A Dental Crown

If you fail to maintain the health of your dental crown, it is possible to have your tooth decay underneath or around the crown. Depending on how extensive the tooth decay is, the dental crown can be patched, but sometimes will need to be removed entirely. In these situations, the dental crown is no longer able to be used and must be replaced.

In some cases, the dental crown can just fall off before you are even aware of the tooth decay underneath it. When this occurs, it’s important to adhere to the following advice:

·         First, call Smiles By Sands and we will schedule an immediate appointment with you

·         Go to the drugstore and purchase temporary dental cement and apply it as per the instructions

·         Clean the crown and your tooth

·         Avoid chewing on the crown and be aware that it could fall off again before your appointment

·         If possible, we will reattach your dental crown in about ten minutes. However, if significant tooth decay is revealed under the crown, you will need to undergo the entire dental crown procedure again

If you have experienced tooth decay more than once under a dental crown, you need to consider your eating habits. While brushing and flossing daily is vital to maintaining your oral health, it’s important to cut down on snacks throughout the day, as this is a major culprit of tooth decay.

If you are considering dental crowns or believe you are suffering from tooth decay under your dental crown, please contact Smiles By Sands, serving Valley Village and surrounding areas of California, immediately to schedule an appointment.

Importance Of Getting Veneers From A Cosmetic Dentist vs. A General Dentist

Although porcelain veneers are an instant orthodontic fix to numerous cosmetic, oral issues, it’s still vital that you use a skilled and experienced cosmetic dentist as opposed to a general dentist. If not, you risk:

  • Your porcelain veneers dislodging
  • The veneers placed improperly
  • Not having the optimal porcelain veneer lifespan
  • Having a poor color matching job done, resulting in you being dissatisfied with the cosmetic appearance of your porcelain veneers

Each of the above risks that are inherent with having a general dentist place your porcelain veneers as opposed to a cosmetic dentist can have many catastrophic results apart from cosmetic dissatisfaction. The most common of these is having a cavity form.

While the ceramic material porcelain veneers are made of are resistant to staining and future decay, if an inexperienced general dentist attaches your veneers, they might accidentally leave a ledge between the veneer and your teeth. As you show off your new smile, unbeknownst to you, miniscule food crumbs will accumulate inside the ledge and eventually form a cavity. In the more unlucky cases, a root canal or dental crown will be required due to the mistake of an inexperienced general dentist.

If you’re considering having porcelain veneers attached to your teeth to brighten your smile and fix its imperfections, please contact Smiles By Sands, serving Valley Village and surrounding areas of California, today to schedule an appointment with our skilled, cosmetic dentists.
